This page is dedicated to sharing my affection towards brazilian music and all of it’s genres, maybe you’ll like one of them too. As musics that I hear change, I’ll keep updating this page and adding new playlists and recommendations :)
For some genres, I will put links for my public playlists on Spotify , if anyone is interested in hearing more about a specific music genre that I mention here. I’ll also try to add a small text talking about the history of each genre, but please remember that I am not a professional musician or even researcher in music.

Samba
Samba is a broad music genre with it’s subgenres originated on different regions of the country. For instance the samba de roda was originated in Bahia (northeast region of the country), while the samba de bumbo had it’s origin on the state of São Paulo (more to the southeast). Today, the most recongnized style of samba is the urban carioca samba, born from afro-brazilian communities at Rio de Janeiro. On the XIX century, approximately half of the population at Brazil’s capital (which was Rio de Janeiro at that time) was composed of black people. One slavery was abolished in 1888, many black people from Bahia migrated to the capital seeking better life conditions. Heitor de Prazeres, a pioneer on samba who participated on the foundation of the first samba schools, referred to Rio de Janeiro as “Little Africa”. This migration and the marginalization of the black population led to the foundation of the first candomblé terreiros, where the sambda de roda from Bahia would acquire characteristics from the carioca (carioca refers to those born at the city of Rio de Janeiro) culture and originate the urban carioca samba.
